Man and boy facing charges after fiery crash on Idylwyld Drive in Saskatoon

A 24-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy are facing charges after a fiery crash on Idylwyld Drive in Saskatoon on Tuesday, which left an 82-year-old man in critical condition.

According to police, officers were called to the intersection of Idylwyld and 58th Street West just after 8 a.m. after getting reports from Corman Park Police that a Dodge Durango SUV was driving erratically and was heading into the city via Highway 11.

“While responding, further updates outlined that the Durango had collided with a Ford Transit van south of the highway 16 overpass on Idylwyld Drive,” the Saskatoon Police Service said in a statement.

“The van subsequently caught fire and the driver, an 82-year-old male, was transported to hospital with critical injuries.”

Police said three people were taken into custody after the crash and noted that the SUV had been reported stolen in Prince Albert.

On Wednesday morning, police announced that two of the three people who were arrested are now facing charges.

The 24-year-old man, identified as Kiefer Ballantyne in court documents, and 14-year-old boy who cannot be named under Canadian law are facing charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000, while the teenager is also facing charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident and evading police. The 24-year-old was also charged with breaching court-imposed conditions.

Bail hearings have been scheduled for this week at Saskatoon Provincial Court.

“A third person was arrested but not charged in connection to this incident,” the police force said.

“The 82-year-old remains in hospital.”

Traffic restrictions on Idylwyld Drive were lifted on Tuesday afternoon.
