Prince Albert’s Thompson Weegar is among the fastest people in the country for his age group.

The 17-year-old has just returned from the Legion national youth track and field championships in Quebec, where he finished fourth in the men’s 100 meter race.

His time of 11.14 seconds, was only .13 seconds off from a third place finish.

Weegar has been to nationals three times, but said this was his best finish. He credits his success to the changes he made in his training.

“This year I did quite a bit more weights, I did some olympic lifting with my coach and my personal trainer, and a lot more plyometric jumps,” said Weegar.

Weegar said the key to success in his sport is dedication and persistence.

“Some days you just have those races that make you wonder why you are even doing track, and you’ve just got to push through those races,” he said.

In June, Weegar finished first at provincials.  He had a personal best time of 11.1 seconds.

Weegar also took home a silver medal at the Western Canada Summer Games.

Despite all his success, he admits he still gets nervous before every big race.

“I usually just try to zone everything out. Sometimes even before my race I won’t talk to anybody for an hour, I’ll just put my ear phones in and just get real focused on that gun when it goes off,” said Weegar.

Weegar is now turning his focus to the indoor track and field season.  Weegar’s goal is to compete at nationals next year in Montreal.  He said he also hopes one day to make it to world’s.

There was another runner from Prince Abert at the competition in Quebec.

Cole Frank, who trains with Weegar, finished 11th in the 100m. race.
