Family fundraiser turns up the heat to help child

One summer fundraiser is set to be a good time for adults and a good cause for a kid.

The adults-only fundraiser will be held on June 19 at the Wildlife Centre with proceeds going to the Bradley family.

Recently, Kayla Bradley’s eight-year-old daughter Mckeisha was diagnosed with autism after years of misdiagnoses.

“They were treating her for a lot of different things: ODD, ADHD, ADD,” said Bradley. “We’ve been dealing with this for seven years and finally they told us, ‘no, she’s got autism’.”

“It made me feel a lot better to confirm what she actually had, but, it also put more stress on me because we have to figure out different strategies on how to deal with it and how to help my kids deal with it.”

As a form of treatment, Bradley said her family is hoping to get her daughter a dog.

“As soon as there’s a dog involved, she calms down dramatically,” said Bradley. “This dog would be able to help her out with her illness on a day to day basis instead of just having to deal with it on her own.”

According to Bradley, support from the community would be an immense help.

“It would mean a lot,” she said. “It’s a large amount [of money] to get the kind of dog we want and to put her through classes with the dog.”

After looking in to it, Bradley said they concluded that a dog, as well as classes for her daughter and the dog to take, would likely be over $4,000.

“That’s a lot for a family of six people to come up with,” said Bradley. Mckeisha has four siblings two younger brothers (five and three) and an older sister (11).

Bradley said the classes would be in the province, luckily, but the family is no stranger to constant travel because of frequent doctor’s appointments and tests.

“I’ve had to travel constantly,” she said. “It’s quite stressful because we not only need to find a babysitter for the little ones, we also have to take time off work and then we have to take her out of school and travel.”

Besides this, the appointments are not without other stressors.

“She doesn’t like being away from us and when it comes to these doctor’s appointments they pull her aside one on one,” said Bradley. “So it kind of stresses her out and makes her feel a little uncomfortable at the same time.”

“Of course I worry because I don’t know how she’s acting or if she’s actually interacting with anybody, so it’s stressful.”

Bradley said they have made 250 tickets to be sold for their event and hope to have as many people as possible.

The first part of the evening will be ladies only, featuring a performance by Body Heat Exotic Male Revue from Edmonton which will run 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. After, a dance will be held for anyone 19 or over. Tickets for the entire night are $25, and tickets for the dance only will be $10 at the door.

To get tickets call Kayla at 306-940-6112 or Curtis at 306-960-6689.
