Case delayed for alleged fraudster

The man charged with stealing millions of dollars from the White Cap Dakota First Nation was in court Thursday.

Hugo Gallegos was widely expected to plead guilty and proceed to sentencing. But after he fired his lawyer just before the hearing, the case had to be pushed to June 18th.

Several members of the band were in attendance hoping to see an end to a case that’s been ongoing since 2013, when police charged Gallegos with theft of at least $2.5 million, alleging that he stole the funds while working as an accountant for the band.

Chief Darcy Bear said he was disappointed with the delay. He said Gallegos has made no effort to return any of the money, forcing the band to pursue actions through civil court.
