SK Premier and Opposition Leader reflect on Alberta NDP win

May 6, 2015 | 5:10 PM

While Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall congratulates Alberta’s new incoming NDP premier Rachel Notley, he also says every political party should learn from the results of the election.

“They obviously ran a very good campaign. There were other things that happened in the election obviously, but you can’t take away anything from a campaign that goes from just a handful of seats to a very sizeable majority. So we congratulate her on that,” Wall said.

Speaking to reporters at the Legislature on Wednesday, the premier noted that Alberta is a very important partner with Saskatchewan and what happens there really does matter here.

“I think the election shows that it’s very important to never take anything for granted whether you’re a 44 year government or an eight year government or a four year government,” he said.

Despite a difference in political ideology, Wall is confident he can maintain a good working relationship with the new Alberta premier like he does in other provinces with NDP and Liberal leaders.

Wall says he hopes Notley will continue to support the New West Partnership which is a free trade agreement set up between the western provinces. He notes that many regulations have been harmonized between the provinces to streamline businesses operating across borders.

The premier also says he hopes to see continued support from the NDP government for the Energy East Pipeline to carry oil to refineries in eastern and central Canada. He did note that there is a bigger question around the support of the Northern Gateway Pipeline through B.C.

Saskatchewan NDP Opposition leader Cam Broten also offered congratulations to Notley.

“We saw a desire for change there and it was also a very optimistic campaign as well. There was a mood for change there and she clearly communicated to Albertans and they made a change in a big way,” Broten commented.

He said he was not surprised by the result because Notley and the Alberta NDP ran a campaign that was focused on the issues that matter to families.
