Prince Albert police rewarding drivers for good behaviour

May 5, 2015 | 5:05 PM

If you see those flashing red and blues in your rearview mirror and you have no idea what you did wrong, chances are it was what you did right.

Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) have kicked off a new initiative partnered with Chuck Boettcher, president of the Prince Albert Mopar Club, to help reward good drivers in Prince Albert.

Boettcher and his club were able to raise funds in barbecues from car shows the club was involved in, and have donated those funds to the PAPS in the way of Co-op gift cards.

“One hundred and twenty $10 gift cards were purchased from the Co-op for rewards to motorists or cyclists who are observed utilizing safe road practices,” said Sgt. Brandon Mudry.

He added that those motorists will be asked to enter their name into a draw for one of three $25 gift cards or one of three $100 gift cards.

Police Chief Troy Cooper said it’s all about creating a more positive relationship between Prince Albert police and citizens of Prince Albert.

“We know that from our past experience with things like positive ticketing that you can reinforce negative behaviour through punishment and enforcement, we do that every day, but from time to time we have an opportunity we have a chance to reinforce behaviour through positive things,” said Cooper. “I think that, especially for the young drivers in the community, this is a way for us to recognize the behaviour that we want to see, point out the people that are modelling behaviour that we think is safe, and it’s an opportunity for us to interact with young people in a positive way again.”

Const. Rob Lindsay, with the traffic division of the PAPS, said he looks forward to being able to have these happier interactions with drivers.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what the look on their face is going to be, when I give them a gift card so they can do an extra bit of shopping,” said Lindsay. “Everybody is using the roadways and everybody wants to use the roadway as safe as possible, we just want the people to obey the rules and if they are seen obeying those rules and doing something that is proactive, something that is safe, we’ll stop and give them a gift, I’m looking forward to it.”

The Mopar Club has partnered with the police many times in the past to donate to various initiatives, and with this fresh new initiative, Boettcher said it’s a no-brainer to be a part of it.

“It’s a really worthwhile program that we have with the Prince Albert Police,” said Boettcher. “I think this is a good one, and I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, they get pulled over and they’re going to get a reward for doing something good.”

The initiative will be running for the next two months, so remember to keep your hands at ten and two, pull over when you need to use your cellphone or for emergency vehicles and be courteous to other drivers and you may just see those red and blues in your rearview mirror.
