Playing field shrinking for PGLL’s Preds Saturday start

May 2, 2015 | 12:20 PM

The Prince Albert Predators will have fewer teams to play against this season in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL).

The PGLL saw their number of teams decrease from seven to four. The Estevan Big Dogs and Yorkton Bulldogs have both folded after playing in the league last year. Saskatoon used to have two teams – the Steelers and Smash – but next season they’ll have just one—the Saskatoon S.W.A.T.

“Numbers are down across the board for lacrosse,” said Chris Lesanko, the PGLL commissioner and program coordinator for Saskatchewan Lacrosse. “For some of the smaller centres, they just couldn’t front a junior team.

“It usually correlates to different things, kids can be picking up other sports but it’s usually a systematic pattern. Every seven years, we’ll hit a low. But after another seven years, we’ll peak again. It’s kind of always been like this. We just don’t have the volunteers in place as well in these smaller communities.”

Lesanko believes the four-team PGLL setup could be temporary as Moose Jaw and Estevan could return, and Saskatoon could get back to two clubs. Their numbers have been down the last two or three years, but Lesanko believes their strong bantam and midget numbers could help things bounce back.

Although the junior ranks have fallen this year, the PGLL senior league has been having a lot of success. Lesanko said the senior league’s numbers have been “higher than I’ve ever seen.” The Moose Jaw Chiefs joined last year, making four senior teams and they’ve all remained for this year.

They’re “all those kids that are moving up through the midget and junior programs, they want a place to play so they’ve developed senior (teams),” said Lesanko. “I’m hoping down the road that P.A. will establish, because those kids need a place to play after their junior program.

“(P.A. lacrosse) is always a top-notch organization from front to end, even their minor programs all the way up to their junior programs.”

The Predators still get to play their normal 12-game regular season, with six home games at the Kinsmen Arena.

The PGLL playoffs have changed format as well, as all four teams will be guaranteed a best-of-three semifinals series, before a best-of-three finals.
