Mustangs 1-1 at Westerns; 2 local goalies get national bronze medals

Apr 28, 2015 | 12:10 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are one of three teams with an even 1-1 record after their first two games of the 2015 Western Canada Cup Junior A tournament in Fort McMurray, Alta.

They dropped their opener on Sunday with a 6-3 defeat to the Portage Terriers from Portage La Prairie, Man., before beating the Spruce Grove Saints 4-3 in overtime on Monday.

Fittingly, Dakota Boutin had that overtime winning goal. Last year in the 2014 Telus Cup finals, Boutin scored the triple overtime winner for the Prince Albert Mintos to defeat les Grenadiers de Châteauguay 4-3 in the longest game in Telus Cup history.

Fellow former Minto Justin Boyer leads the Mustangs with two goals in the first two games.

The Mustangs have Tuesday off and will battle the only undefeated team in the tournament, the Penticton Vees. The Vees are 2-0 and have outscored their opposition 17-3. They feature former Prince Albert Raiders forward Dakota Conroy, who has four points in two games.

Meger caps off successful season with Pat Cs

Prince Albert Raiders prospect Curtis Meger got a bronze medal with his Regina Pat Canadians at the 2015 Telus Cup national midget AAA hockey championships in Riviere-du-Loup, Que.

Meger made 28 stops in a 6-3 win over the Strathmore Bisons in the bronze medal game. Meger didn’t lose a game in the four appearances he made, winning three and getting a tie in the last group stage game against the Newbridge Academy Gladiators. Meger had a .921 save percentage and 2.40 goals against average.

Meger signed a WHL standard player contract with the Raiders on March 25.

Fetching a Esso Cup bronze medal

Prince Albert goaltender Karlee Fetch helped the Saskatoon Stars to a bronze medal at the Esso Cup national female midget AAA hockey championships over the weekend in Red Deer, Alta.

Fetch stopped 27 of 28 shots in a 5-1 win over the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday in Red Deer in the bronze medal game for the medal.

Fetch, 17, won all three games she appeared in, while registering a .935 save percentage and 1.33 goals against average.

Fetch has committed to the NAIT Ooks Women’s Hockey Team program in Edmonton.
