Demolition begins as Salvation Army vows Prince Albert services will continue

As demolition begins at the former Salvation Army Community Ministries building in Prince Albert, the organization says meals, clothing and other supports will continue from temporary locations.

“Well, it’s just a building,” Major Ed Dean said. “And ministry is still happening. We have not stopped. We just have had to change locations for now.”

Some streets around the building on Central Avenue and 9th St. East are restricted or closed while the demolition continues, which is expected to last several days.

Dean said the Salvation Army has moved its meal program to the Union Centre and church services to the Open Door Community Church of the Nazarene while it works through the next stage of recovery. He said the organization remains one block away from its former site.

The Salvation Army is still feeding about 100 to 125 people six days a week and continues to provide clothing and hygiene products, Dean said. “We still continue to feed. We still continue to distribute clothing and hygiene products,” he said.

More than $280,000 has been raised since the Christmas Day fire, including donations tied to the organization’s Plates of Hope fundraiser.

“The support we have received from the Prince Albert community has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Dean said in a media release.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Prince Albert police. Dean said the loss of the building is painful, but added: “It’s the close of one chapter, but it’s the opening of the new chapter.”
