Breakfast honours big names for Big Brothers and Sisters

Apr 20, 2015 | 4:34 PM

Prince Albert’s chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) couldn’t pick just one of its helpers as the volunteer of the year.

The honour was shared between Nikki Hemsworth – who works hard to put on the Diva for a Day golf fundraiser – and CTV’s Teena Monteleone, who also helps with fundraisers for BBBS.

Volunteers who happen to work in the media industry were well-represented at the breakfast.

paNOW publisher Karl Johnston and his wife Linora Johnston were named the volunteer couple of the year for their year’s efforts.

Their ‘little,’ Ryan, enjoys shared activities involving puzzles, monster trucks, crafts, visiting petting zoos, and making food together.

A speech from volunteer – and paNOW reporter – James Bowler covered the value of finding time to give back by mentoring a child.

The event’s main speaker, former Roughrider Don Narcisse, had a big brother growing up.

Narcisse teared up when speaking about his recent induction into the CFL Hall of Fame.

He explained how difficult it was to share the news about the induction with his mother, who had dementia.

However, she didn’t get the chance to see Narcisse receive the honour because she passed away.

She had a lot of belief in Narcisse and kept him positive even when he was struggling in his football career, Narcisse said, and he’d wanted to share his success with his mother.

Big Sister of the Year went to Courtney Wendelborg.

Since Wendelborg took on her little sister in June of 2013, they’ve enjoyed visiting the lake, swimming, rock climbing, and going to Raiders games. ‘Little’ Faith calls Wendelborg “awesome and the best big ever.”

The Prince Albert Optimist Club won the honour of service club volunteer of the year. The club donates space for BBBS activities, volunteer for BBBS, and help with 900 CKBI’s weekly radio bingo.
