Strangers raise money for robbed Regina senior

Apr 3, 2015 | 4:04 PM

From Weyburn to Prince Albert, people across Saskatchewan are sending the message to an 80-year-old woman in Regina, “not all people are bad.”

The senior was robbed in broad daylight last weekend while sitting outside her home enjoying the sun and now she’s scared to go outside.

The thief took her purse containing all her ID, her reading glasses, an address book, keys and more.

After hearing her story, CJME started getting calls from random strangers across the province who wanted to help. A fundraising page was launched on gofundme.com which surpassed the $1,000 goal in less than 24 hours.

A man and his family from Weyburn are some of many who decided to help the woman and also encourage her not to lose faith in society.

“It is one bad apple which basically was responsible in making that nice woman lose her faith in an entire community which is heart wrenching,” he said.

“You have to help because it is not who we are as people, I mean, generally people are good,” he added.

That’s the message shared by the generous strangers who are commenting on their online donations.

“You are like my mother to me. She taught me well to help bring faith back to mankind. I hope you never lose that. There are good people in this world.”

“I know how it feels to be robbed, but some people in my community rallied to replace not only my money lost but my faith in mankind as well.”
