Christmas Cheer broadcast raises $10K

The annual Christmas Cheer broadcast on 900 CKBI raised $10,000 on Friday morning.

The funds raised during the two-hour broadcast will go towards helping local families through the Salvation Army. It’s the 65th year that CKBI and Salvation Army have partnered for this event.

This year was Lt. Shawna Goulding’s first year at the broadcast table.

“It was a great experience to be on this side of the radio, I guess, and to hear the phones ringing. It was just a neat experience to hear that happening.”

One of the big donors this year was Canadian Tire, which stepped forward with a $5,000 donation.

Goulding said the funds raised this year will mean there will be a little extra to the Salvation Army can provide either to more families or to families in general.

“That in itself could mean another hundred Christmas meals provided for families,” she said.

The funds raised will definitely be used in the months ahead, she added.

The support demonstrates that we’re here to help our neighbours, according to Goulding.

“Because we don’t know who it is we walk by who is in need and who is in need of that hand up and just to see people stepping forward and taking the opportunity to do that is indeed a joy to watch.”

The Christmas Cheer broadcast is one of the Salvation Army’s campaigns this holiday season. Its Christmas hamper drive is nearing an end and the Christmas Kettle campaign ends on Dec. 24.

“We’re doing well with that,” Goulding said. “We’re hoping these last few days will be the final kick at the kettle kind of thing and we’re hoping to meet our goal and the experience that we’ve seen with the community so far, I have no doubt that we will.”
