St. Louis Bridge detour causes concern

Oct 9, 2014 | 7:10 AM

The construction of the bridge over the South Saskatchewan River near the Village of St. Louis is nearing its completion.

Joel Cherry, communications with the ministry of highways and infrastructure said the bridge should be completed later this fall.

A grid road detour has been put in place south of Prince Albert while the bridge is being completed and realigned with Highway 2.

“We work with the R.M. of Prince Albert to pick the best option,” Cherry said.

Cherry said they are maintaining the detour to the best of their ability.  However, the detour has caused some mixed reactions for people who have to use it often.

Owen Meabry uses the detour from the bridge every day and said traffic is an annoyance for him and has experienced other problems.

“I’ve had a couple troubles, like it rattled something loose on my truck that I had to get fixed … It’s been not the greatest but you make it work.  Other than that it’s not too bad, the traffic really just bothers me ‘cause my house is there so that’s kind of my main thing,” he said.

Matthew Gray said he goes through the detour every day.

“Detour’s okay, it’ll be better once the paving’s done.  It’s kind of one of those bitter pills you swallow while you’re waiting for the thing to finish … It’s okay but we’ll be glad when the paving’s done,” he said.

Cherry said the bridge is pretty much built but is working to complete the connectors.  The connector on the north side will be complete later this fall but the connector on the south side of Highway 2 will not be complete until the spring.
