Corner Gas movie to start filming in June

There will once again be a lot going on in Rouleau as a Corner Gas movie will start filming in the Saskatchewan town starting June 23.

Executive Producer Virginia Thompson is calling the project a “thank you” for the fans of the hit show. The production was confirmed over the long weekend by star and creator Brent Butt who also asked for fan's help to support its kickstarter campaign.

“That kickstarter campaign raises money for us to be able to provide super cool experiences for fans,” Thompson said. “For example if fans want to get their names in the credits, there’s a way to do that. If fans want to even get a part in the movie, there’s a way of doing that.”

Even without the Saskatchewan Film Tax Credit, the provincial government has provided some financial support for the project. Thompson explains that the government is supporting ‘Corner Gas: The Movie’ in a similar way to how it supported the Juno Awards that took place in Regina and Moose Jaw in April 2013. She says this movie is really more of a Saskatchewan event because the premiere of the movie will be in the province.

“It’s interesting. I think with this particular project because it’s such an important Saskatchewan story, the government of Saskatchewan has been incredibly open and interested in this project from the very beginning.”

Thompson says the whole cast is coming back for the movie which will wrap production in Saskatchewan by July. She even offered a few hints about the plot.

“Corner Gas is about a lot of nothing in the middle of nowhere in a lot of ways. But in the Corner Gas movie, there’s actually a lot going on,” Thompson said. “Dog River is in jeopardy, Mayor Fitzy has made some very bad financial decisions, and Dog River is basically bankrupt.”

The movie is a joint production between Ontario and Saskatchewan meaning half of the crew is from each province. All of the shooting is here in Saskatchewan but post-production will be hosted by both provinces.

Tourism Saskatchewan is kicking in $1.5 million for the project.
