Carlton awards five Outstanding Athletes

Although Carlton’s 38th Annual Sports Banquet didn’t go exactly as planned thanks to a fire alarm-related delay, it ended up a great night for at least five athletes who received Oustanding Athlete of the Year awards.

Matthew Meyer and Cole Sanderson shared the Outstanding Junior Male Athlete of the Year Award, the reason for the five award winners instead of the traditional four.

Here are all five winners and a brief description of their accomplishments, starting with the two senior winners.

Tashawna BelhumeurOutstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year

Belhumeur dominated wrestling, with just one loss all season on her way to a provincial gold medal. She also finished seventh overall at nationals.

With her success in wrestling, Belhumeur earned a full scholarship at the University of Regina.

Belhumeur is the first ever female wrestler to receive the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year award.

Devereaux Gatin-  Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year

In his first year with the Carlton Crusaders football team, Gatin was a very versatile performer. He was the team’s top receiver, top point producer as their kicker and an important defensive player playing safety.

He was also named the Crusaders senior boys basketball MVP for the second consecutive year.

Gatin also won the Outstanding Junior Male Athlete of the Year award after the 2010-2011 school year.

Carly ZultokOutstanding Junior Female Athlete of the Year

Zultok is a two-year player for the senior girls volleyball and basketball teams despite being a junior.

Zultok also won finished in the Top-10 in the senior girls tetrathlon at the provincial track and field event. The tetrathlon is a four-disciplined event including 100m, 800m, long jump and shot put.

Matthew Meyer/Cole Sanderson Outstanding Junior Male Athletes of the Year

Both Meyer and Sanderson were both important members of the senior boys volleyball team.

In addition, Meyer took home two provincial track gold medals in shot put and discus at the midget boys level.

Sanderson was the starting setter for the volleyball team, while also logging a ton of minutes for the senior boys basketball team.
