RCMP find Glenavon man dead after standoff

Apr 6, 2011 | 7:48 AM

After not being able to make contact again with a distraught man in Glenavon, RCMP officers went into the building and found him dead.

Nine hours earlier, RCMP received a call about the man. He was at the town's former school, which is being renovated into a hotel.

Officers at the scene learned he had a gun and was threatening to harm himself.

Homes nearby were evacuated and roads were closed.

Hours passed. Officers had been able to see the man in the buiding. After some time passed when they could no longer see him, they entered the buiding.

It was then they found the 36-year-old dead. He had been alone in the buiding.

Sgt. Paul Dawson of the RCMP said shots were never fired by RCMP.

The coroner has been called in to determine the cause of death.

Glenavon is about 115 kilometres southeast of Regina on Highway 48.
