Ice Wolves get ‘pivitol’ game three victory: Beatty

Apr 5, 2011 | 11:56 PM

Travis Eggum needed only 22 seconds of overtime to put the puck in the net.

The visiting La Ronge Ice Wolves won game three of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Credit Union Cup, on Tuesday evening at the Farrell Agencies Arena, in Yorkton.

“I don't think you could score (any sooner),” Eggum joked, following his first goal and second point of the night as his Icewolves regained home ice advantage in a 4-3 OT win over Yorkton.

Eggum suggested that there could be even more overtime games in the finals series before it's over.

“Oh absolutely … we're conditioned for it,” he said.

Bob Beatty, head coach of the Ice Wolves, said game three of the series is always important especially considering that the series was tied at 1-1 heading into it.

“Obviously, game three is always a pivotal game in the series,” he said because the gain home-ice advantage.

He also said he expects big things from the team when on the road, reflected in the club's 31st away-game victory of the season.

Beatty said he expects that Wednesday night's game four will no doubt be a big test for both teams.

“We know Yorkton's a very solid team,” he said.

The Terriers' acquisitions late in the season of power forwards Jeremy Boyer and Justin Buzzeo, who had an assist on the first Yorkton goal, added to their strength.

The Ice Wolves' Eggum said there is no way Yorkton wants to head back up north down two games in the series.

His team opened the scoring at 4:33 of the first period, when Logan Herauf got down on one knee to put La Ronge up 1-0 when he connected on a pass from Eggum.

Robbie Ciolfi answered back for the Terriers at 9:00 from Justin Buzzeo and Clarke Breitkreuz.

La Ronge took the lead back when Graham Smerek found the back of the net on Devin Peters at 12:56, but Zak Majkowski pulled Yorkton even, from Breitkreuz at 4:35 of the second period, on the power play.

Once again La Ronge answered with the go-ahead goal.

Justin Ducharme picked the top corner on Peters from the top of the left faceoff circle to make it 3-2, but Yorkton would not go away.

Nathan Murray drew even for Yorkton at 8:31 of the third period from Riley Paterson and Brenden Poncelet.
Eggum would notch the winner at 22 seconds into overtime off a goal-mouth scramble.

La Ronge took game one, 5-2, while Yorkton won game two, 3-0, both were played in La Ronge last weekend.

Game four of the best-of-seven final goes Wednesday at Farrell Agencies Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.
