The movement of meat within Canada dominated much of the discussion at a recent meeting of Canada's agriculture ministers in Toronto.

Ottawa is preparing to launch 19 pilot projects across Canada to expand inter-provincial trade in meat.

Right now provincially inspected butchers and meat processors can’t cross provincial boundaries with their product, unlike those who are federally regulated.

“We’re trying to bring them more in line with federal regulations, just make it easier for them to do that trade, but at the same time help their bottom line because they can access new markets, said Bob Bjornerud, agriculture minister for Saskatchewan.

He said, It’s one of many requests they’ve heard from industry to improve market access for agricultural products.

Bjornerud is hopeful to see Saskatchewan on the list when Ottawa names the pilot projects in the coming weeks.
