It’s Always a Good Time to Work on Your Ride

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but in the garage it’s delightful!

If you’re a car guy who is fortunate enough to have a garage to park your baby in, winter really doesn’t seem to be much of a hardship. One thing about us car fanatics, there is never enough time for tinkering.

Whether it’s just a routine job like changing oil or you are going for broke (like the attached picture) and decide to tackle a major rebuild, winter can be a very rewarding time of year.

Unless you have a newly rebuilt old car, chances are something is going to go wrong at some point. You are going to be heading to a show in a neighboring town and a fan belt is going to set itself free or a rad hose is going to decide it needs to let off a little steam; they’re old cars, it’s going to happen!

Winter can be a great time to take stock of what needs attention. This time of the year provides ample opportunity to look at all of those items that you may not check on a regular basis.

Checking belts and hoses, repacking wheel bearings, looking at brake pads and rotors, changing oil in the differential; there are any number of jobs that can be done when you have the time to do them.

Or, there is the other alternative I mentioned, doing a huge overhaul which is not a task to be taken lightly.

For my old truck this winter, this was the option. Pulled the engine and did a complete rebuild, painted the engine compartment, rebuilt a majority of the interior and a complete new wiring harness. I mention all of this to make another point:

I am not a mechanic but there is no better teacher than hands-on! Winter work can have another benefit in that if you are not afraid to tackle a project, you will be amazed at what you can learn.

Spring is coming and we are all itching to hit the road and enjoy our ‘rides’.

Enjoy what we have left of the winter months though and remember, underneath all that snow…..there is pavement!!

Keep the rubber side down!
