Snowmobiler recovering in Saskatoon hospital

Jan 25, 2011 | 5:27 AM

A snowmobiler who spent Saturday night and most of Sunday stuck out in the cold is recovering in Saskatoon hospital with moderate hypothermia.

The man, who lives near Waldheim, was snowmobiling by himself when he experienced a breakdown.

He used his cell phone to alert his wife about the problem, but he didn't know where he was. Then his cell phone battery died.

Rosthern RCMP Sgt. Norm Flemming says the man's wife first called the detachment Sunday morning. Four officers were ordered to start scouring the area and a search plane from Prince Albert was also dispatched.

However, the man was found by two of the dozen or so snowmobilers who volunteered to help in the search.

“Their knowledge of the local area and trails was really integral to (the search),” Flemming told News Talk Radio. “A big shout-out to them. They did a great job.”

Flemming says the man was rushed to hospital in Rosthern, but has since been transferred to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

As of Monday afternoon, the details and time lines were still unclear. Flemming says officers have not yet interviewed the Waldheim man about his ordeal.

“It was better to talk to him later and get him warm right now,” Flemming explained.
