Wind, rain and snow predicted for May long weekend in the North

Wednesday will be the last sunny day for a while in the province before rain, and potentially snow, hits the North.

Environment Canada meteorologist Dan Fulton said a major spring storm is expected to bring high winds and rain to southern and central Saskatchewan, starting on Wednesday night.

“For today, it’s going to be quite a beautiful day over much of the province,” Fulton said. “A little bit windy, but not quite as windy as we’re expecting on Thursday.”

Prince Albert will have a sunny Wednesday with temperatures climbing to a peak of 27 C this afternoon, before the clouds come in and bring a 60 per cent chance of rain overnight. Wind gusts will reach 30 to 50 km/h as rain will continue into Thursday with risk of a thunderstorm. Rain is also in the forecast for Friday and Saturday with the potential for it to turn into snow on Saturday.

The long weekend will be a chilly one with a mix of sun and cloud. The peak temperature will reach 14 C with lows of 2 C.

In the Battlefords on Wednesday, the wind will gust between 40 to 60 km/h this afternoon. Rain is predicted overnight into Thursday with risk of a thunderstorm, and increased wind gusts from 50 to 70 km/h around noon. With the increased wind gusts and rain, a special weather statement is in effect and the public is encouraged to tie down loose items and prepare for difficult driving conditions due to dust.

The weather office said strong winds are expected to persist into Friday.

Meanwhile, some rain is also expected to accompany the system as it moves into Saskatchewan. Fulton said the western half of the province will likely get hit the hardest by the rain, but it’s hard to say for certain at this point.

“There’s going to be convection mixed, in like thunderstorms and things like that, so that always makes it pretty difficult to say where exactly is going to get the most amount of rain,” he noted.

For both the Battleford area and Melfort, rain will continue into Friday and Saturday, with a risk of snow on Saturday. The long weekend will be a mixture of sun and cloud.

Snow is forecasted for the La Ronge area on Friday after a rainy Thursday as Saturday is predicted to be cloudy with a high of 4 C and low of -3 C. The sun will return Sunday with a high of 8 C and Monday with a high of 11 C.

“That’s not atypical for the May Long Weekend,” Fulton explained.

“That’s the way it seems to roll, I’ve noticed through the years doing this job.”
