Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games coming to Prince Albert

Dec 17, 2010 | 1:22 PM

Prince Albert will be hosting the 2011 Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games.

The event will run from Feb. 11 to 13 and athletes from all across Saskatchewan will travel here to participate in curling, figure skating, floor hockey and snowshoeing.

“The games are a very necessary part of what we do in terms of providing sport opportunities for individuals with an intellectual disability,” said Al Dyer, chair of the games.

Dyer said Prince Albert wasn’t determined to be the host city until late September, which is unusually late.

“We decided to host these games at kind of the last minute, so we’ve been playing catch-up a fair amount in terms of trying to put the planning together,” said Dyer.

“Prince Albert, being a strong community, has just rallied, and just really provided a lot of support. The groups involved are all working extremely hard and we’re just finding things are going rather well.”

The cost to run the games is about $60,000, which has to be raised, but it has received some help from Conexus Credit Union, who has already donated $10,000.

“One of our initiatives is to promote youth, as well as sport and recreation, and this fits both of those criteria,” said Kim Kotylak, a teleservice manager with Conexus.

The Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games is a qualifying event for the Special Olympics National Winter Games, which will take place in St. Albert, Alberta in 2012.
