Celebrating 40 years in style

Dec 10, 2010 | 5:28 AM

It won’t be just another game at the Art Hauser Centre on Saturday, when the Prince Albert Raiders take on the Everett Silvertips.

It’s the 40th anniversary game, celebrating their SJHL debut at the old Communiplex on Dec. 12, 1971.

“The first game was actually delayed because the ice plant was still not up to capacity, and there were a number of delays throughout the night,” said Bruce Vance, director of marketing and media relations for the Prince Albert Raiders. “But they did get the game in, and the Raiders actually won the game 9-3 against the Regina Pat Blues.”

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Raiders will be bringing back the green, white, and gold jerseys. The special commemorative jerseys are sponsored by Conexus, and will be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going to the education fund.

“We’re celebrating in style. We think people will really like the old, green jerseys we’re bringing out for Saturday night,” said Vance.

There will also be several Raider alumni present, and the 40th Anniversary Committee will be bringing both the Centennial and Memorial Cups to the Art Hauser Centre as well.

“The Centennial Cup is actually coming out of the archives at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto,” said Vance.

The Centennial Cup used to be awarded to the SJHL champions. The trophy was changed in 1996 to the RBC Cup. The Prince Albert Raiders won the Centennial Cup in 1977, 1979, 1981, and 1982.

The Raiders also won the Memorial Cup in 1985, having moved to the WHL in the 1982-83 season.

There will be a 40th Year Book available on Saturday, as well as the first 2,000 fans will receive a Raider 40th Anniversary eco shopping bag.
