Moose Jaw pork plant gets $1.7 million federal funding boost

A major announcement from Ottawa means good things for Saskatchewan's pork producers and the City of Moose Jaw.

On Friday, the federal government announced $1.7 million in funding for the Thunder Creek Pork Plant in Moose Jaw.

The money will go toward the purchase of new slaughter and meat processing equipment.

The old pork plant will be operated by Donald's Fine Foods based in British Columbia. Company CFO David Pruim says this is a big day for not only his company, but for Moose Jaw as well.

“it gives us a great opportunity to locally source high quality hogs and work on our long-term partnerships with Sask Pork, the City of Moose Jaw and the Government of Saskatchewan,” he said.

Pruim expects the plant to open in January, with 221 full time employees processing about 1,200 hogs each day or 300,000 hogs each year.
