Busted water main plagues high school for second day

The principal of St. Mary High School is hopeful to have students back in class tomorrow.

A second water main break forced the cancellation of classes for a second day in a row.

Mark Phaneuf said he was surveying the situation last night when he was informed by the city the problem was more complex.

“They fixed the initial leak … had it plugged up and when they (pressurized) the system they had another problem elsewhere,” Phaneuf said.

“They have to basically tear everything apart and get back at it today in a different location.”

With students missing classroom time for a second day there is a concern about the loss of instruction time.

“With the integrity of the credits in the semester system we are always concerned with hours that are lost for the students. Time on task is an important aspect.” said Phaneuf.

“We have a very compassionate staff and so they are going to work to make sure that the work load doesn't necessarily get piled on to kids, but making sure that the kids have covered the work that they need to be able to move throughout the credit system.”

City crews were in front of the school early this morning working on this second break.

Phaneuf said he is fairly confident they will be back in the classroom tomorrow.
