Are You Interested in Becoming a Children’s Restraint System Technician?

Mar 10, 2011 | 9:29 PM

Between 2005 and 2008 there were 1,220 injuries and 17 fatalities of children under the age of 12 in Saskatchewan.  As many as 10,000 children are killed or injured in traffic collisions in Canada every year.  It is estimated that proper installation and use of child restraints can prevent more than 70% of these injuries and 90% of these deaths.  Unfortunately, not all car seats are installed correctly.  Of the car seats checked by technicians in Saskatchewan in a recent study, 81.4% were improperly installed by caregivers.

Many of the injuries and deaths to children in vehicle collisions are preventable.  This is where you can help.  Become a Children’s Restraint System Technician as part of your job, community organization, or just as a volunteer.  The course is FREE of charge, and will give you the skills you need to become a valuable resource to caregivers in your community.

The Children’s Restraint System Technician Training is organized by the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute with St. John Ambulance providing certification. The 3 day Technician Training includes classroom lecture, hands on training, a multiple choice test, and practice at a car seat clinic.  If you successfully complete the course you will have the necessary skills to:

· Check car seats for caregivers at clinics or by appointment

· Provide educational sessions

· Be a child passenger safety resource in your community

Once trained, Technicians are required to check at least 10 seats a year to maintain their certification. The Technician may need to have the ability to perform these checks as part of their job.

Technician Trainings will be held in:
