Eight City Blocks – Affordable, Quality Housing

Sep 28, 2015 | 12:08 PM

In 2015, about 70 new housing units have been under construction in Prince Albert, through the initiative of local agencies and our Saskatchewan Party government.

This brings the total number built since 2007, to over 300. That is the equivalent of eight square city blocks of new or renovated affordable housing units.

Last week two events were held to celebrate more families achieving home ownership through Habitat for Humanity. It was my privilege to represent the Province of Saskatchewan as a new homeowner received keys to their new home at a dedication ceremony.

Through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), $50,000 was contributed to help support the project, located at 462 19th Street East.  Additionally, contributions to this build came through Carlton High School carpentry students and instructors, many Habitat volunteers, and Western Financial Group.

Ground was broken for another Habitat for Humanity home at 452 19th Street East.   The Province is contributing $65,000 to support the construction of this home.

Each family contributes at least 500 hours into building their home. Building a home while working and taking care of a family takes determination. It is all worth it when they finally move into their own home and celebrate their achievement. Each Habitat home represents a new beginning for a hard working family seeking a safe, quality home.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Since 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $7.85 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters in 13 communities.

In Prince Albert, our government has also partnered with Prince Albert Community Housing Society, Riverbank Development Corporation, and the Northern Spruce Housing Corporation to bring quality, affordable housing to our city. All of our partners deserve recognition for coming together to strengthen our city, and keep Saskatchewan strong

Our government is committed to continue making important investments in housing and other critical infrastructure. It is our strong, diversified economy that allows us to achieve this.  These investments create opportunity for all Saskatchewan residents to enjoy a better quality of life.
