‘Who’ are you?

Aug 12, 2013 | 12:43 PM

This week’s Geekfile: Who is who is who?

We’re talking about who is playing who and also the newest Who, to hit the Whoverse.

Are you tired of the word who yet? Well it’s about to get worse!

I’ll start with the big stuff, and of course many of you know, on Sunday Aug 4, it was announced that the new Doctor would be played by favoured Scottish actor Peter Capaldi…and everyone in Canada and the States went “who?”

Well, he’s best known for his role as a spin doctor on the series ‘The Thick of It’ which was so popular a spin-off movie was made called ‘In the Loop’.

Are some of you with me now? Okay well for the rest of you he was the World Health Organization doctor in World War Z with the really funky looking facial hair.

There you go, I knew you’d catch on.

Say hello to the new Doctor, and if Capaldi’s previous roles dictate anything, this is going to be a much darker version of the Doctor that David Tennant sometimes let out in various episodes.

Could be very interesting to see, Tennant was always one of my favourites because of that dark underbelly that he sometimes showed when his character was pushed too far.

I’ve already heard some trepidation from non-British viewers about the choice of this older Doctor (Capaldi is like 60), but remember when we were all worried about Matt Smith and then he turned out to be awesome? Yeah, that happened.

Anyways for all of you who are bawling over the fact that Matt Smith is leaving and even you diehard Tennant fans, you’ll get to see both incarnations one last time in the 50th Anniversary Special this Christmas.

Now moving into the who’s who in the film universe we move to Vin Diesel.

In July Diesel announced on his Facebook page that he had received a call from Marvel, which then lead to him teasing about filling a role in an upcoming film.

He even tweeted that he would be playing a character with a very different type of love story relationship, based heavily on the relationship Dom had with Letty in ‘The Fast and The Furious’.

And now we’ve found out that Diesel will be playing Groot in the newest upcoming Marvel film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

That’s right; he’s the voice talent for a talking tree…that barely talks.

And who Groot falls in love with? I have no idea; there is no indication that Groot ever had a love interest. What is this Evil Dead?

Interestingly Groot appeared on Ultimate Spider-man (an awesome Disney XD cartoon) and he was voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan, shortly before the actor passed away. The episode only recently premiered. So if you want to see Groot in action pre-Guardians then check out that episode which is titled ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ what a surprise.

And this is the perfect lead into my next news, which has to do with ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’.

There are two stories that may have a connection about the movie.

Recently Jim Carey was spotted on the set of the second installment by a Spider-Man superfan who tweeted the photo.

Why is this interesting?

Well recently it was announced that a famous comedic actor would be joining the crew as a character who would have a villainous future in possibly the third or fourth installment of the film.

So of course the internet blew up.

One hot topic is that Jim Carey may be playing Cletus Kasady. That’s right, The Riddler could be playing my absolute favourite comic-book villain of all time…Carnage.

If this is true I am absolutely on board, and Marc Webb has been brilliant in his casting choices so far so it may not be far-fetched.

The only hitch to the validity of this is Carey’s recent stand against violence in movies when he spoke out against his character in not-yet-released ‘Kick-Ass 2’.

However in that movie he is playing a civilian who using excessive violence in an anti-hero movement to protect the public.

If he played a super villain in a comic-book sense he may not be against that type of violence.

He’s married to Jenny McCarthy, so either way that man can do no wrong in my book.

And continuing the trend of the Spider-Man rumors, who is Felicity Jones ACTUALLY playing in the film?

So many people are speculating Black Cat, based on an interview that she did where when she was directly asked about her role as Black Cat she sputtered and mumbled and basically avoided the answer.

Yeah, that looks suspicious, but she could have also been almost about to say she wasn’t playing Black Cat and then stopped herself.

We all know Marc Webb likes his secrecy when it comes to his characters.

When she teased that she would be the girlfriend of an upcoming villain in the film many thought it would be Dane DeHann’s character

Harry Osborne who is speculated to become the Green Goblin.

In that case my thought is she will be playing Menace, who is created when Harry’s girlfriend comes in contact with the Goblin serum that was created originally to save Norman Osborne in the comics.

That would make much more sense, I can’t see Black Cat being an upcoming character for reasons I won’t speculate on.

But when it comes to Marc Webb anything could happen and he seems to be constantly changing his mind on character roles as we saw with the recent pull of Mary Jane from the film.

So that’s all I have for the who’s who right now, I’m sure there are many more questions revolving actors in upcoming films but we really can’t get to them all here.

For the video of the week I’ve found a leaked copy of the new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer that was released during SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con for the nerd newbs).

If this is no longer working I do apologize, Disney is hardcore with licensing and they take these videos down quick.

So click on it while you can here!

Also I’ve created a new Youtube Channel, and while I’ve started it by doing Big Brother reviews (gotta get those first few subs somehow) I’m moving into talking about the stuff I write about in Geek File while playing Minecraft. It’s called Geekcraft and the first episode is up and running.
