Northcote MLA Report

Mar 12, 2012 | 2:18 PM

As MLA for Prince Albert Northcote, I’m very pleased that weight limits were restored to normal on the Diefenbaker Bridge this month. This is great news for everyone in Prince Albert! In particular, I’m excited that many Northcote businesses, their staff, and families will benefit.

The Province of Saskatchewan has shown leadership and forward thinking by including our vital transportation link in the Urban Highway Connector Program.

This means the government will pay for 100% of the bridge repairs which takes a tremendous pressure off of the city. Previously, this unplanned expenditure would have cost the municipality 50%.

Northcote is also positioned to benefit economically by the federal government’s recent announcement of a $3 billion deal to sell Uranium to China. With 20 per cent of the global resource in Saskatchewan, uranium mining pumps hundreds of millions of dollars into our economy each year through expansion, salaries, taxes and royalties.

People in Saskatchewan who have nutrition questions, can take advantage of a free service called “Ask A Dietitian”. As our Government supports efforts to promote wellness, I brought this service to the attention of the Legislature last week.

The Saskatchewan Dietitian’s Association is offering the program during Nutrition Month (March), and makes it easy for people to find the answers to their nutrition questions. You can access the service until April 27, 2012 by calling, 1-800-905-0970.

Many families right now are investigating their options for a Saskatchewan summer vacation. The province has made it easier than ever to have those plans include fun at a Provincial Park. Our government has expanded the 14 night maximum stay during peak season to more parks, and made all camp sites open for either walk-up or reservation. Beginning at 8 a.m. CST on March 12, 2012, reservations can be made in real-time for 24 parks through www.saskparks.net or by calling 1-855-737-7275

The new constituency office for Prince Albert Northcote has been open since December 2011. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of assisting over 60 people in the riding. I encourage Prince Albert Northcote constituents to visit at 5A 598 15th St East, or call Sharon at 922-4220 with your viewpoints or specific issues. Address emails to mlajurgens@sasktel.net.

Watch this column for information of a new website launch later this month. The website will feature information specific to Prince Albert Northcote constituents, and how I am working for you as your MLA.
