New Head Contact Rule Causing a Stir!

The new head contact rule handed down by Hockey Canada is causing quite a stir, but it was brought in for a reason — the safety for all our players and respect for each other and the game.

There is blame to be placed with the advent of this rule and it falls on all of us, yes all of us.

The player who has lost the art of throwing a clean open-ice hip check and who chooses to take the easy way out, by simply push his gloves into his opponents face.

The coach who forgot the importance of teaching players how to throw and receive a body check.

And the referee who has decided not to call the rules that have been in place for years, and therefore allowed the game to deteriorate to the state it has.

But with the proper enforcement of this new rule we have a chance to change the thinking of a generation of Hockey people and make the game better from this day forward.

Just as we in the hockey world all must share in the blame, we can all share in the success of change.
