City to hold repair cafés monthly

Mar 22, 2018 | 2:00 PM

After a successful first event, the City of Prince Albert announced it will host repair cafés every month.

A repair café offers tools and advice to help people repair their broken items, including furniture and small appliances. Intended to help reduce waste in municipal landfills, the repair café movement began in the Netherlands in 2009. The Prince Albert repair café held March 3, the first of its kind in the province, was well-attended, with 14 items repaired.

The event was so successful the city announced repair cafés will be held on the first Saturday of each month at the Margo Fournier Centre.

“We hope to see the event grow over time as we start to see trends in the type of items fixed and as we build a resource pool of volunteer fixers, tools, and supplies,” café organizer Lillis Lawrence said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
