Power 99 donates airtime to promote ‘Fresh Start’

Mar 16, 2018 | 2:00 PM

A local non-profit organization in Prince Albert is the recipient of the 2018 Power 99 Community Airtime Award.

Fresh Start received $75,000 worth of advertising on the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group radio station to help promote and fundraise its initiatives. Executive Director Bernice McNair was surprised with a cheque presentation Friday morning.

“I thought I was just coming here to answer more questions for the selection committee,” McNair said.

For the past 11 years, Fresh Start has helped disadvantaged people in Prince Albert through daily hardships. They donate bread and offer a soup and sandwich meal every Saturday, but the group wanted to do more by offering a program that helps people move towards a more productive lifestyle through employment.

“Often these are people who don’t have any work experience or support like family members because they’ve been in social systems their whole lives,” McNair said. “They don’t understand work as a way to make a living or that work gives you a sense of purpose.”

Fresh Start wants to start a small business and employ clients, so they can teach them how to be good employees and offer them a reference when they move on. McNair said he believes hundreds of people could benefit from the work preparation program in Prince Albert.

“When Bernice came to us and did her presentation, she had such a sense of passion. She wants to make a difference and help change lives and how could Power 99 not want to be a part of that,” Kevin Einarson, sales manager for Power 99, said.

The $75,000 airtime donation includes a complete marketing plan, creative and on-air support. Einarson said the commercials will help bring more awareness about the non-profit group and help fundraise for the work preparation program.

Previous recipients of the Power 99 Community Airtime Award include: The Children’s Haven, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Prince Albert, MADD and Hope’s Home.
