Man pleads guilty to manslaughter in Cowan shooting

Mar 16, 2018 | 12:00 PM

One of the three men accused in the homicide of 23-year-old Jonathan Lee Cowan pleaded guilty to manslaughter yesterday.

Preston Spencer Dean Bird was initially charged with murder and set to stand trial at Prince Albert’s Court of Queen’s Bench. Yesterday he changed his plea, court employees confirmed, admitting to manslaughter in connection with the 2016 shooting.

Another of the three accused, Tyler Pechawis, also pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was handed a sentence of more than eight years. At Pechawis’ sentencing in November of last year, the Crown said Pechawis, Bird and a third man, Reno Roy Keenatch, went to Cowan’s home seeking to fight a man over an alleged theft of $200. Although they did not find the man they intended to fight, the Crown said Bird shot Cowan “point-blank” in the stomach with a shotgun, killing him.

Bird is set to be sentenced May 24.
