Presenting sponsor announced for 2018 World Softball Championship

With the countdown on to what is expected to be one of the largest sporting events ever held in Prince Albert, community organizations are lining up behind the 2018 Junior Men’s World Softball Championships.

In the Johnny Bower Lobby Friday, the host committee announced the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation (NLCDC) will act as the presenting sponsor for the WBSC event.

Blake Charles is the general manager of the NLCDC and said the organization was drawn to support the event in part due to the youth involvement.

“Whenever we see an event that comprises of youth, be it sports, arts, music, whatever it is, we try to contribute in terms of funding a portion of the project,” Charles said.

The NLCDC encompasses a wide swath of the North — from Meadow Lake to the eastern sector — and Charles hopes the event has a positive influence on youth development all across the North.

“There are so many opportunities and that leads to other positives within the youth’s development,” he said. ”Anytime we can partner and assist, we see that the youth have an opportunity to live to their potential whatever that is, be it sport to other things in life. That is one of the key reasons why we try to support these types of events.”

The NLCDC has now participated in all three phases of Project Triple Play. They were the presenting sponsor of the 2015 U16 Boys Canadian Championships, Phase 1, and a major supporter of Phase 2 and the “We play for Shaye” Campaign, which was tied to the facility improvements. The $40,000 donation Friday will complete the trifecta of support, according to the host committee.

“They are going to help us make sure the world know P.A. is on the map,” Ian Litzenberger, director of sponsorship said. “We are glad they are a part of this great Junior Men’s events.”

To date, nearly $1.2 million has been raised for the project. The 2018 Junior Men’s World Softball Championships will run from July 7-15. The tournament will bring teams from at least 10 different countries, along with their supporters.
