Police Commissioners explain hiring process for new chief

Feb 16, 2018 | 2:26 PM

Prince Albert’s next police chief will be selected using a very thorough process, according to Prince Albert’s Board of Police Commissioners

Earlier this week, the board announced Deputy Chief Jeff Rowden will fill the role while they select a permanent replacement for outgoing Chief Troy Cooper. Cooper held the role since 2012, but announced his resignation last month after accepting the top position in Saskatoon.

According to the board, the city will employ a two-stage process to select the new chief.

First, a shortlist of candidates will be selected by a screening committee consisting of Mayor Greg Dionne, City Manager Jim Toye, PAGC appointee Rick Sanderson, and member-at-large Pat Weir. The screening committee will review the applications, complete reference checks, and forward recommendations to the hiring committee.

During the second stage in the process, the hiring committee will interview the candidates selected by the screening committee and make the final decision on who will fill the role. Dionne will sit on the hiring committee along with Councillors Dennis Nowoselsky and Evert Botha, and board members Linda Greyeyes-Highway, Patty Hughes, Brent MacDonald and Jerry Paskiw.

According to a statement from the board, the appointment of the new chief “will not be a quick process.”

“This is a major decision that affects our community,” the statement read, “and the Board will take the necessary time to make that decision.”

The city’s next chief of police will be announced publicly following the selection process.
