Crime not an issue during evacuation: Pelican Narrows RCMP

The special security measures put in place by the band and RCMP were more than enough to keep property safe during the evacuation of Pelican Narrows, according to an officer with the local detachment.

Cpl. Jason Collen, of the Pelican Narrows RCMP detachment, said the police prepared for a rise in property crime during the evacuation and the detachment added a few extra members as a precaution. The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation took special security measures as well, Collen said, but the police were “pleasantly surprised” by the lack of major issues during the crisis.

“Things went well right from the beginning,” he said. “It’s been pretty quiet up here. We haven’t really had any significant issues. We were concerned about issues with property damage, but it didn’t materialize.”

Collen said the local detachment, usually staffed by 14 members, added an additional four officers and a dog unit during the evacuation as a precaution, but things were quiet with the town’s population reduced to a skeleton crew and a number of exhausted firefighters.
