In investigation has been launched by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice after the video of an altercation between RCMP and an accused was found to be deleted while in the possession of RCMP.
On Friday, July 21, at roughly 4 a.m. Meadow Lake RCMP reported to an altercation at a residence in Meadow Lake. Police located an adult female with minor injuries outside the residence.
Two officers received minor injuries during an altercation with an adult male at the residence. Neither members required medical treatment.
After the incident however, police learned a witness had recorded the altercation between the Meadow Lake RCMP officers and the accused on a cell phone. In a press release, RCMP said the phone was seized and added an alleged altercation between the witness and one of the members occurred. The statement added that video was discovered to be deleted while in the care of the RCMP.
RCMP is now conducting a separate investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding the deletion of the video and the alleged altercation between the witness and officer.
The RCMP has asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an Independent Observer to assess the impartiality of the investigation.
RCMP was not able to provide any more details because the investigation is ongoing.
The accused male appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on Monday, July 24, charged with assault, two counts of resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer.
He has been remanded into custody to appear in court in late August.
