Members of Saskatchewan’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit including members from the Prince Albert Police Service participated in an international child pornography bust which resulted in an 80-year sentence for a man from Texas.

Robert Dion Ables, 40, was arrested in December 2016 on a related federal criminal complaint according to a release from the United States Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

In March of 2017, Ables pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography and two counts of producing child pornography. Ables, who is from the Dallas area, was sentenced to 960 months, or 80 years in federal prison.

The investigation began on November, 21, 2015 when the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit received a complaint from a southern Saskatchewan detachment regarding the exploitation of a young girl through social media. Ables was identified through the username he was using. The information was passed along to authorities in the United States, where the investigation continued. Police searched Ables’ residence and he was subsequently arrested in December of last year. Releases from HSI and the Saskatchewan ICE Unit stated Ables used social media on his cellphone to convince young girls to send him sexually explicit images. He would then blackmail the girls into sending more images by threatening to further distribute the photos.
