Inmate charged with murder in connection with penitentiary death

A penitentiary inmate has been charged with murder in connection with one of the recent deaths inside the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

RCMP have charged inmate Tyler Vandewater, 28, with second-degree murder in connection with the June 7 death of maximum-security inmate Christopher Van Camp. Police were notified of the death by penitentiary staff and treated it as suspicious from the beginning of their investigation.

Van Camp, 37, had served three years of a sentence for numerous charges including robbery and fraud at the time of his death. He died the same day as convicted murderer Daniel James Tokarchuk, though penitentiary staff have said there is no connection between the deaths.

The RCMP said they are continuing to investigate the matter with help from their forensic identification and major crime units. An autopsy has been scheduled to take place this week.
