Zablocki and the Rebels are Esso Cup champions

It was a storybook ending for Prince Albert’s Stryker Zablocki and the Regina Rebels as they claimed gold at the 2024 Esso Cup.

Zablocki scored the winning goal and was named the tournament’s MVP as the Rebels beat the North York Storm 2-1 on Saturday.

The gold medal game was a rematch of the first game of the tournament last Sunday, which the Storm won 7-6 in overtime.

This time, the Rebels were ready for the grudge match, putting up 49 shots over three periods.

However, the first period would see both teams without a goal.

That changed in the second period when Berlin Lolacher made it 1-0 at the 13-minute mark. Two minutes later, Zablocki would notch her eighth goal of the tournament to make it 2-0.

While Lily Paisley of North York scored in the third period, that’s as close as they would get as the Rebels would celebrate their 2024 Esso Cup win.

The gold medal is extra special for the Rebels after they won bronze at last year’s Esso Cup in Prince Albert.

Zablocki finished the Esso Cup with eight goals and three assists for 11 points and was named the tournament MVP.

The win on Saturday was the second major accolade that Zablocki has captured so far this year.

In January, she won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the U18 Women’s World Hockey Championships. She finished that tournament with two goals and seven assists.

Meanwhile, the Edmontoon Jr. Oilers claimed the bronze at the Esso Cup, beating the host team, the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers.
