Shellbrook country artist wants to be Canada’s favourite

Jun 7, 2017 | 12:00 PM

A local country artist is hoping to make it big on a national stage.

Shellbrook’s Kelsey Fitch has been chosen to represent Saskatchewan in the Canadian Country Music Association’s (CCMA) seventh annual Spotlight Competition. The artist with the most votes gets the opportunity to perform with big names at the CCMA Fan Fest in Saskatoon, from Sept. 6 to 10.

She said she’s excited to represent the province and called it an honor to be nominated.

“It’s a huge opportunity for the winner…for many reasons, besides the fact I will be sharing the stage with award winners, but there will also be labels, managers and radio programmers taking in the performance, which could be a career launching performance,” Fitch said.

She said it would mean everything to win as last year’s winner, Amy Nelson, is also a Saskatchewan artist.

A little about Kelsey

Just last year, Fitch won Song and video of the Year for “Lights of a Combine” at the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards.

“The video has kind of become a little bit of a harvest anthem. It was shared all over the world, like Russia, it went crazy. It has over 74,000 views on YouTube,” she said.

The 27-year-old has been singing since she was five and professionally singing since she was 15. She said her mother is very musical, as she taught piano lessons and conducted the church choir. Growing up, her parents listened to all kinds of music, especially classic rock and it wasn’t until high school that Fitch got into country.

“Once I started getting into country music, it was something that I found very easy to relate too and especially in the song writing aspect, I loved the way that country music told stories,” she said.

Fitch needs your votes from June 7 to 16 to win. Lake Country Co-op and Original Joe’s restaurants across Saskatchewan are helping her collect votes also, by putting up posters and sharing links on their social media pages.
