Accused killer fires lawyer

May 9, 2017 | 5:00 PM

A man facing second-degree murder charges fired his Legal Aid lawyer this morning in Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Danny Lee Ledoux, 30, was charged with second-degree murder after Shellbrook RCMP discovered a woman unresponsive at a Mistawasis First Nation home, March 3. The victim, later identified as 28-year-old Cindy Joseph of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, was pronounced dead in a Shellbrook hospital. RCMP said Joseph and Ledoux were known to each other.

Today Ledoux made an appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court over video link from Saskatoon Correctional Centre, where he is currently being held. Ledoux’s lawyer Ian Goldberg told the court he needed to step down as counsel, as Ledoux had fired him during a recent meeting.

“It would appear obvious he needs counsel,” Judge Hugh Harradence said, emphasizing the seriousness of the charge against Ledoux and the potential life sentence it carries.

Ledoux said he had prepared a statement to read for the court, but Harradence declined to hear it because it might have revealed private discussions between Ledoux and Goldberg. Instead, Harradence gave Ledoux a choice between making an appeal to Legal Aid for new representation, and having the court appoint a lawyer for him.

Ledoux said he wished for a court-appointed lawyer and began to suggest a potential candidate, at which point Harradence told Ledoux he would have absolutely no input if the court was forced to appoint a new lawyer to the case. Ledoux then changed his mind and said he would make an appeal with Legal Aid.

He will be back in court May 29.
