Celebrating Ukrainian tradition through Pysanka creation

Apr 15, 2017 | 5:00 PM

paNOW sat down with Marcia Coulic-Salahub to learn how to make Pysanka, a traditional Ukrainian Easter Egg, which through the use of beeswax and dye, are decorated with meaningful designs.

The eggs tend to be laced in elaborate symbols, such as crosses and churches to identify beliefs or contain images of wheat and animals as a way to ask God for a good a harvest or hunt in the upcoming year. They also can speak to one’s future hopes and fears.

The dye colours also hold deep meaning. Red can represent the blood of Jesus Christ, while white showcases purity and green is the colour that brings forward spring and rebirth.

Check out the video below to learn more about the history of Pysanka and the process involved in creating the handheld symbolic works of art.
