A Prince Albert nurse could face $30,000 in fines after commenting about her grandfather’s treatment in a long-term care facility in Macklin, Sask.

Carolyn Strom is facing sentencing following a Facebook post from February of 2015. Strom wrote the treatment her grandfather received, was “subpar.” She alleged the facility and its employees were not “up to speed” on how to approach end of life care.” Strom was found guilty of professional misconduct in October of 2016.

The lawyer representing the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association (SRNA), Roger Lepage, said the potential fine would consist of a penalty for Strom’s comments and a portion of the association’s investigation into the post, which has so far totalled $143,000.

During sentencing submissions in Regina, Strom’s lawyer Marcus Davies said she should instead be registered for online code of conduct courses and not fined more than $1,000.
