Sask. Rush look for fifth straight win

Feb 18, 2017 | 8:00 AM

A Saskatchewan Rush win this weekend will solidify the team’s hold on first place in National Lacrosse League standings.

Tonight the 4-2 Rush take on the 4-3 Colorado Mammoth in the first of four regular season meetings. A win for the Rush will solidify first place in the West Division, while a loss will drop the team down to second.

Rush Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan said Colorado has played really well in the last two weeks. The Mammoth, he said, is right on the Rush’s heels.

Since 2014 the Rush have gone 10-2 versus the Mammoth with Mark Matthews, Zach Greer and Robert Church leading the charge for Saskatchewan offensively. Matthews leads the team with 55 points against Colorado, followed by Greer with 49 and Church with 36.

The Rush will still get offensive help from Matthews and Church this weekend, but an off-season trade sent Greer to Colorado for Adam Jones.

“Zach [Greer] was a big part of our organization for a number of years,” Keenan said. “[He is a] great player, and a great leader.”

Prior to the opening faceoff Greer will be presented with his championship ring from last season and the Saskatchewan team is organizing a tribute video for him.

“At the same time it’s business as usual for us,” Keenan added. “We have to take care of him. He’s a heck of a player, a dynamic player, so we’ll certainly have to pay attention when he’s on the floor.”

John LaFontaine is likely to suit up again for the Rush after missing two games and Aaron Bold will be starting in net. In five games this season Bold has a 4-1 record to go along with an impressive .779 save percentage, the second-best in the league.

Earlier this week, the Rush organization announced that Miss Universe Canada, Saskatchewan’s own Siera Bearchell, will be at the game. Bearchell will drop the game ball at the start of the contest and present the keys to the car the team is giving away.

Opening faceoff is at 7:30 p.m. at SaskTel Centre.
