Melfort locals pondering about pickleball

Feb 15, 2017 | 1:06 PM

A sport that appears to combine tennis, badminton, and ping-pong could be coming to Melfort.

Carol Korol is among a several people trying to get a pickleball league started.

“We’ve seen it played because we both belong to Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness (Association) and we just want to bring a different sport into the community,” she said.

The sport has origins in Washington dating back to 1965, and is commonly played by people on their winter vacations.

Korol said the response so far on social media has been very good, and she is surprised at how many people are not aware of what pickleball is.

To help get more intrests and more people informed, a recreational evening is planned for Thursday night at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

‘It does sound like we’re gonna have a good turnout tomorrow so we’re really hoping that we do,” Korol said.

She said if they get enough interest they willl start off with an indoor league but will also look to start a drop-in night.

Funding for the league has been provided through a grant from Melfort Multi-K.

The recreation night runs from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Paddles and balls will be supplied.
