January declared ‘Crime Stoppers Month’ in P.A.

As a new year begins, the public is being reminded they can help reduce crime within Prince Albert. The city has declared the month of January “Crime Stoppers Month.”

“The program has been in Prince Albert since 1986 and in that time has received close to 10,000 tips from the public on crime within our community,” Prince Albert Police Sergeant Travis Willie said. “We’d like to thank the mayor and council for recognizing the program with the declaration.”

Crime Stoppers is a not-for-profit community-based charity which brings together the efforts of local police, the media, and the community. The public is encouraged to submit anonymous tips on crimes. If it leads to a successful arrest, recovery of stolen property or seizure of illegal drugs, Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,000.

“We use software to help us calculate the amount of the rewards,” Sgt. Willie explained. “The more risk involved with the crime, the higher the reward.”

The program is financed through personal and corporate donations. Nearly $50,000 in cash has been handed out by Prince Albert Crime Stoppers to anonymous tipsters since the program started. Willie said roughly $586,000 worth of property has been recovered by police and over $340,000 worth of drugs have been taken off of the streets.

The official theme for Crime Stoppers in 2017 is “See something. Hear something. Say something.” Willie ensured residents they can help the police without putting themselves in danger.

“It’s the information we want. Not your identity,” Sgt. Willie said.

He encouraged anyone with information about a crime to call the Prince Albert Police Service through the confidential Crime Stopper Hotline which operates 24 hours a day at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
