Raiders start out hot but fall in SO to Warriors

Jan 3, 2017 | 9:21 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (8-29-1-2) had their best offensive start to any game this season, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 6-5 in a shootout to the Moose Jaw Warriors (22-9-6-1) Tuesday at the Art Hauser Centre.

After falling down 1-0 just 36 seconds into the game, the Raiders scored three times by the 10:41 mark of the opening frame with goals from Parker Kelly, Luke Coleman and Sean Montgomery. They led 3-2 as a result after the first period.

But the Warriors went 3-6 on the man-advantage, got a hat trick from Brayden Burke and were able to come away with the victory.

“Our power play and 5-on-5 was good, our penalty kill struggled a little bit tonight,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “We took some penalties that weren’t calls, but we took some penalties that were calls and too many of those. That cost us.”

The Raiders faced four different deficits but got some key goals to tie it. The newest Raider Curtis Miske made it a 4-4 game halfway through the third period. Miske was acquired on Monday from the Spokane Chiefs and barely made it to the Art Hauser Centre in time for the contest.

“I left from Spokane as soon as I found out about the trade and drove to Fernie, B.C. last night,” Miske said. “Then I got up at 6:30 this morning, drove to Calgary and flew from Calgary at 2 o’clock to here. I got here at about 6 o’clock, just in time for warmups.

“I just walked in. I knew nothing about the systems but they just said to be free out there, play your game and just have fun. That’s what I did.”

After Burke completed the hat trick, rookie Carson Miller tied the game with 1:50 left. Of Miller’s seven WHL career goals, three of them have come against the Warriors including his first in his WHL debut last year on Feb. 10.

Nicholas Sanders got the nod in goal for the Raiders, and made 32 saves on 37 shots. Just on Sunday against the Regina Pats, Sanders saw a Raider record 72 shots against, stopping 65 of them.

“He deserved to go back in, that’s what we’re trying to do here,” Habscheid said. “It’s one thing to flip-flop your goalies but we want them to strive to play the next game. If they play good, they play the next game.”

The Prince Albert Traders

With the addition of Miske on Monday, the Prince Albert Raiders have now made 13 trades throughout the season. Here is what they’ve received, and what they’ve given up in those moves.

Those figures do not include the Dalton Yorke trade on draft day, Reid Gardiner signing with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, waiving Kolten Olynek or then picking up Olynek from free agency.

Nic Holowko finds himself on both lists as the Raiders got him from Seattle, then shipped him to Kamloops. Cameron Reagan was acquired this year from Kamloops, but was later reassigned.

Lowest attendance on frigid Tuesday

The Raiders’ attendance for Tuesday’s game was 1,755, their lowest since Sept. 23, 2009 when they drew 1,751.

Familiar Yanks next on the list

On Friday, three players with Prince Albert hockey ties will visit the Art Hauser Centre as members of the Tri-City Americans. Former Prince Albert Raiders Rylan Parenteau and Dalton Yorke, as well as Prince Albert product and former P.A. Minto Riley Sawchuk are on the Americans active roster.
