Beef conference promises to ‘raise the steaks’

Dec 30, 2016 | 11:00 AM

Over 200 cattle and beef producers from across Saskatchewan and western Canada are expected to attend the Saskatchewan Beef Industry conference next month in Regina.

Dubbed ‘Saskatchewan’s Premier Beef Event’, the conference runs from Jan. 24 to 26, at the Queensbury Convention Centre.

Conference Coordinator Shannon McArton said the conference will focus a lot on research.

“There’s going to be a lot of topics about feed and nutrition, disease management and herd management,” she said.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, there will be a marketing panel which will look at the industry from all aspects.

McArton said they will have a retailer on the panel as well as a buyer, a producer and a beef analyst.

One of the guest speakers at the conference will be Trevor Carlson, a consultant from Saskatoon.

“He’ll be talking about what the consumer wants and what the producer can do to deliver it,” McArton said.

There will be no shortage of attractions at the conference including a beef cutting demonstration put on by Canada Beef.

The Bovine Tuberculosis scare in Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan grabbed a lot of media attention of late.

Cattle ranchers were rocked over the past two months after an Albertan cow slaughtered in the United States in October was found to have the disease.

McArton said despite the incident, optimism in the industry remains fairly strong.

“It’s not where it was a year ago. It’s an industry like all others and has its ups and its downs but the people I’ve been talking to are sounding very optimistic for good things in 2017,” she said.

Anyone interested in attending or registering for the conference, can do so at the conference website
