PAGC brings youth together to find solutions to suicide crisis

Dec 5, 2016 | 8:27 AM

Roughly 200 people are expected to attend a strategy planning workshop today in response to the province’s suicide crisis.

The Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) and the Federation of Sovereign Indian Nations (FSIN) have invited education staff, health and wellness workers and youth from First Nations across Saskatchewan to participate in the event.

Organizer Sheryl Kimbley said a registered psychologist who serves as a community development and mental consultant for many Indigenous communities across Canada will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Darien Thira has offered training workshops and clinical consultation. Kimbley said Thira will present a plan to hopefully eliminate suicide in northern communities within five years.

“He says [it will take five years]…and that gives me hope. I think a lot of people read that and said, ‘you know, we’re on board.’ And I think it’s about working the process he is going to lay out…and if its true…that is going to be such an awesome message to receive,” Kimbley said.
